Rain didn't dampen our spirits
We always have fun at our carnival and this year was no exception! Despite having to postpone for a couple of days due to torrential rains our 4th Annual Carnival was a great success. With Scotiabank once again generously matching dollars raised (thank you, Scotiabank!), our proceeds were in excess of $6,000.
We hope you like the photos we took!

A message from TAG
We greatly appreciate the work that the Jobs 'R' Us people did at the e-waste event on September 11th. The coordination of that section of the day was well done and extremely well organized. Barb Stokes also helped Melissa with the set-up and take-down, and certainly went above and beyond. Please extend to her our appreciation of her dedication.
We filled two trucks - approx 10,000 lbs of e-waste. It was extremely fortunate that the Jobs-R-Us workers were able to process as much material as they did. They certainly achieved a lot more dismantling than I had anticipated they would be able to accomplish. Their efforts meant that we were able to have Lindsay Scrap Metal take the excess that couldn't be handled by Greengo. I can see that they will be terrific workers when we get the Centre operative. Please also extend our thanks to the workers. I have enclosed a couple of photos that we have, we will have more photos next week that we can share. Thanks to all for a job well done!

Artists in our Midst
This summer Len Harfield, president of the Village Art Group, was the recipient of a very special colouring book. Designed and illustrated by Janet Sheridan and online researched by Robert Humphries, the colouring book is an educational tool for young children visiting the Kawartha Settlers' Village.
To add to the excitement of the book, there is a checklist of items on the back cover for children to mark off as they find those items in the Village - a clever educational ploy! It was John Tremblay, Treasurer of the Kawartha Settlers' village who came up with the idea to include this page as a way to encourage children to take a closer look at village artefacts.
Robert is supported by Community Living Kawartha Lakes and Janet is a Community Support Worker. Both were kept busy on July 15th autographing the colouring books that were purchased by those attending the presentation ceremony.
Len Harfield, Village President Al Ingram and City of Kawartha Lakes Councillor Pat Warren joined in the official presentation that Janet and Robert made to the Kawartha Settlers' Village.
This project has taken Janet and Robert a year and a lot of hard work to complete.
Said Janet, "Robert and I are very pleased to be involved in this project. We believe in Kawartha Settlers' Village and what everyone who volunteers here is aiming to achieve. The book is about pioneer life and we hope it will be educational as well as fun to colour."
Sharon Johnson created the search page on the computer. Kelly Johnson of Craig Printing in Fenelon Falls did the computer set-up for the book.
Mary Kennedy represented Crayola at the presentation. The company donated packages of crayons and pencil crayons to accompany the first 70 books sold.
The proceeds from the sale of the book will support the Village and help to promote it in the community and beyond.
This is not Robert and Janet's first collaborative effort. In 2004, after three years of hard work, they finished writing a book about the history of the Bobcaygeon Library.
The Kawartha Settlers' Village colouring books sell for $3 each. Contact the Village at (705) 738-6163 or settlersVillage@nexicom.net if you'd like to buy the colouring book.
Thank you to Osprey Media / Peterborough Examiner, Janet Sheridan and Robert Humphries for this story. Thank you to Mrs. Humphries, Robert's mother, for taking the photos included with this story.
A Decade of Learning in Fenelon
On Wednesday, September 26th Community Living’s Northern Learning Centre celebrated their 10th anniversary. Held at Fenelon Falls United Church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the celebration was hosted by the staff, volunteers and participants of the Learning Centre.
The luncheon featured an amazing spread of sandwiches, cheese, fresh fruits and vegetables and beverages prepared by folks at the Northern Learning Centre. Dessert featured an awesome 1/2 chocolate - 1/2 vanilla cake from Sobey’s.
While enjoying the luncheon, guests visited with friends old and new. They especially enjoyed the opportunity to take a look at display tables featuring arts, crafts and academic assignments completed by Centre participants over the past decade. Current participants of the Northern Learning Centre were pleased to be hosting the event and to share their accomplishments with the guests attending.
The Northern Learning Centre group meets weekly, every Wednesday, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The group meets at the Fenelon Falls United Church and is facilitated by Community Living Kawartha Lakes staff person, Jessica Nairn and volunteers, Verna Humphries and Geri Webster. Nine individuals with intellectual challenges currently attend the NLC programs.
The group runs from September to June (during the school year) and participants are given the opportunity to develop skills in reading, writing, math and money, arts and crafts, journaling, budgeting, telling time and Canadian studies.
Each morning, participants start out by discussing current news and what they did over the past week. Then they work on money skills, reading and writing. Reading skills are enhanced by playing a fun game of Bingo with words.
On occasion, a guest speaker will come out to the Northern Learning Centre to share his or her special knowledge or talents. Celebrations are held along the way for holidays and birthdays.
In addition to the Centre’s activities on Wednesdays, Community Living Kawartha Lakes offers a cooking class for participants every Thursday. The class is also held at the Fenelon Falls United Church. Participants plan menus, prepare a grocery list and then shop for the groceries. Once back at the church, they build on their kitchen skills by working together to prepare a delicious and nutritious meal that everyone shares.
The Northern Learning Centre would not be able to do its important work without the assistance two very valuable volunteers, Verna and Geri. Verna has been helping out at the Centre since its inception in 1997; Geri has been involved since 1999. Both volunteers are dedicated to, and enthusiastic about, their work at the Northern Learning Centre. During the anniversary celebrations on Wednesay, Verna was recognized for her decade of service to the Centre.
Volunteers Opportunities at the Centre
Community Living Kawartha Lakes is in need of a volunteer driver in Fenelon Falls. The volunteer would drive two people from the Secondary School to the Salvation Army in Fenelon Falls (approximately one block). Assistance is needed on Mondays at 2 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Fridays at 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m., September until June, inclusive. If you can assist in any way - even if it is just for one day per week - please contact Jessica Nairn at (705) 328-0464, ext. 328 or (705) 308-9345.
We are also looking for a volunteer with experience in woodworking to share his or her skills with participants of the Northern Learning Centre. This volunteer opportunity requires involvement only on Wednesdays until 2 p.m. and is not a weekly commitment. If you might be able to help us out, please contact Jessica Nairn at (705) 328-0464, ext. 328 or (705) 308-9345.
We also welcome folks interested in speaking to our group or sharing other skills and talents. If you have something special that you’d like to share with us, we welcome you to contact us at the numbers above.
Community Living Kawartha Lakes exists so that people with intellectual challenges and their families can achieve their personal goals and participate in the development of healthy, inclusive communities.
Thank you to Jessica Nairn for her help with this story and to everyone at the Northern Learning Centre who posed for my camera.
