Healthy workplace accolades

Community Living Kawartha Lakes has been recognized for our outstanding commitment to workplace health and wellness. Community Living Kawartha Lakes received the silver Healthy Workplace Award through the Health for Life initiative of the Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit. Workplaces were judged based on the health, safety and wellness programs offered to employees.

Health for Life is a community partnership that encourages and supports thousands of people in Southern Ontario to make healthy lifestyle choices so that they enjoy their health for life. Since 1998, Health for Life has worked with many committed individuals and groups in Haliburton County, Northumberland County and the City of Kawartha Lakes to see this vision come true.

The Healthy Workplace Awards are an annual event. Workplace health is especially important since adults typically spend about two-thirds of their waking hours on the job. Health For Life's Workplace Health Program is a free service that can help organizations put into place healthy workplace initiatives that are good for their staff and bottom line. To find out more about the Workplace Health Program by calling 1-877-349-9902.

Jobs'R'Us can help!

Can't get to the Beer Store to return your bottles for refund? Have you thought of donating your bottles to Jobs 'R' Us to be recycled? Bottles can be dropped off anytime between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at our location, 107 Lindsay Street South (south entrance at the Kawartha Lakes Boys & Girls Club building). You can also contact us at (705) 340-0146 to arrange for pick-up.

As a division of Community Living Kawartha Lakes, Jobs 'R' Us provides a variety of small business services to the City of Kawartha Lakes area. These services include collating, folding, stuffing, sealing, labelling, packaging, woodworking and assembly along with our primary business - wine bottle washing and recycling.

Once labels are removed and wine bottles are rinsed, cleaned and dried, we package them for resale in the community at a significant cost savings to our customers. Our working partnership with the City of Kawartha Lakes Waste Management and Recycling Department results in far less product going to recycling depots and, potentially, to land fill sites.

For more information about our services or to request a quote, please call us today at 340-0146 or visit our web page.

New Funding for Children & Youth with Autism

summer camp

Autism Ontario and the Ministry of Children & Youth Services have introduced a Summer Camp Support Fund for children with autism. Announced on Tuesday, July 10, the new initiative designates $530,000 in funding to allow 800 children and youth to attend specialized summer camps in the province.

The 2007 Summer Camp Support Fund is available to all Ontario families of children or youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder who retain the services of a one-to-one support worker for their child to attend a community summer camp or summer program.

Maximum reimbursements of $585 per child or youth will be made to help subsidize services purchased between July 1 and August 31, 2007. Applications for summer camp support must be submitted directly to the provincial office of Autism Ontario (not your local chapter) and must received by September 7, 2007.

Funds are available to assist families in reimbursing support workers to attend camp with their children (the fund does not reimburse camp registration costs). You do not have to be a member of Autism Ontario to participate in the application process.

Member of Parliament asks caregivers to share their stories

Summer is a time when Members of Parliament (MP) have some time off but parents and other caregivers actually work harder than ever. Luckily there are some MPs who are noticing the value of care work and wanting to bring more attention to it.

There will be a debate this fall in the House of Commons on the topic of the care of children. MP Lynne Yelich, parliamentary secretary for Human Resources and Development, is urging parents to send along a brief personal note about how present policy affects their ability to provide care.

The personal stories will be cited in the House but people need not be named. Keep your stories brief and she'll contact you for more information if needed. Yelich's office is documenting as many case histories as possible in its move to find fair and equitable tax policy for all care styles.

Please contribute! Send a brief summary of your experience (at-home parent, grandparent, tag-team, home-school, nanny, day home, daycare or other circumstance, etc.) to Toni Chasmar, Yelich's assistant, at the email address below. Mention if you wish how the amount - or lack - of maternity, parental, child allowance, pension or tax policy has affected your struggles. The deadline to send in your submission is September 1,2007.

Send your email to:

Community Living works!

scott - july2007 news
Big day for Scott!

July 18th was a banner day in our house! Our son, 19-year-old son Scott, went to the Water Park for swimming and went down the "big" slide four times! This may seem to be a non-event for other 19-year-olds but Scott carries several different problems including generalized anxiety disorder and an I.Q under 40.

Through Community Living Kawartha Lakes, Scott is able to attend their Summer Teen's Program three days a week. By proper definition, Teens on the Go! is a recreation and leisure group for teens and young adults with intellectual challenges. It runs twice a week between September and June and three full days a week in July and August.

The leader of the group and counsellors are truly amazing with the "kids." Scott has been in the program for a few years now and has gained so much confidence from them. The first year, I excluded Scott from Camp Days completely when they were going to water parks because he just sat on the sidelines and was too frightened to go in the water. Two years ago, Adam and Justin (two of the counsellors) gently coaxed him into the water with games. Scott improved much more last year with continued encouragement and support.

This year he came home all excited telling me that he went down the big slide into the water four times! I asked him who went with him and he said, "Just me - Justin told me to hold my 'bref' to go down!" Here Scott demonstrated with cheeks puffed out and his breath expelled afterwards - and a big smile on his face!

I know I am not alone in my gratitude to Community Living Kawartha Lakes and its wonderful Respite Team. If you look at the happy faces of the kids who participate in the program and talk to their parents and siblings you would realize just how much this positively affects all of their lives.
