POKER RUN CANCELLED

Debra Bumstead,
ATV/Snowmobile Poker Run event chairperson
CITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES: While many people have been enjoying the west coast winter without the expense of travel, a local not for profit agency has been watching the weather with increasing anxiety. As a result of the mercurial weather that the region has experienced, Community Living Kawartha Lakes has cancelled its 2nd Annual ATV/Snowmobile Poker Run. The event was scheduled to take place Saturday, February 10th, 2007, on a course out on Lake Scugog.
Unseasonably moderate temperatures and fluctuating weather patterns have resulted in very unstable ice conditions. The region's snow machine operators are being advised to stay off local lakes, despite the fact that there is ice. "It is our understanding that ice levels change rapidly in response to temperature and weight stress," stated event chairperson, Debra Bumstead. "Fundraising is important to a not for profit agency, such as Community Living Kawartha Lakes, but we simply are not confident of the ice conditions and feel we might put people's well-being in jeopardy," adds Ms. Bumstead.
The cancellation of this event was carefully deliberated. Last year was the first time the agency hosted the ATV/Snowmobile Poker Run and it met with a very favourable response from riders, as well as providing welcome financial support for the agency. Based on early registration numbers the event was set to grow, however after consulting an ice specialist, the long range forecast and taking into consider the appeals for riders to stay off the ice, Community Living Kawartha Lakes is forced to consider an alternative event in a different season to generate funds and satisfy rider support.
